Sunk Cost Fallacy

This means to continue with something that is wrong because of the amount of energy (or time or money or whatever) that has already been invested, rather than cutting your losses and walking away. One example might be enduring an unhappy relationship for years rather than facing the uncertainty of singlehood. But it can also be around ideas or identities. For example, putting a lot of effort into a particular dating strategy, say it involves travel to another country but it doesn’t work out, or perhaps being a gym rat for years, way over the top and using steroids, although it doesn’t make any difference to dating results.

I think there can be another manifestation, which is more unconscious, where a person is actually investing a lot into a certain identity. Someone can be on forums and use being a certain identity to avoid certain things, I’ll leave the meaning of that open rather than give specifics as it can mean different things to different people.
