Ignoratio elenchi linking two unrelated e.g. presidents health care bill is unpopular — he’s probably a spy.
Missing the point means… missing the point. For example, if someone was discussing a long-standing singleton status (unwanted) and the reply is, “Well, just spend more times on your hobbies, and then you won’t be so lonely”, then it would be missing the point, if what the person actually wanted to do was to look at their underlying arguments (beliefs). Often advice is to work out more or check personal hygiene, and that might be OK advice in some circumstances, but other times it’s a much deeper issue, about the structure of modern society.
It also misses the point, what a person wants is intimacy and connection, a person can be attractive and actually have a partner but not have these things, it depends on WHAT THE POINT IS. If it’s losing the V Card, then money might be better spent on an escort, and if the point is connection and intimacy, then there could be many answers depending on the context – intimacy in non-sexual avenues etc.
This could also manifest in one’s thinking. Perhaps a person is spending all their time thinking about not having a relationship, when really there should be a different priority or the whole thing is about something else, really an addiction issue or anger problem that is the cause of this and many other issues.
