Ambiguity Fallacy

Beatles have eight legs, john Lennon is a Beatle

This is a failure to define terms. For example, you can say, beatles have eight legs, John Lennon was a Beatle. John Lennon had eight legs.

This is why, at the start of the huge legal documents we have to go through whenever signing up for something, the first section is always “definition of terms”. That’s because, if there’s a problem and you ever try to sue them, then the ensuing battle is… an argument. You construct your argument as to why they need to compensate you with millions of dollars, and they make a legal argument around why they do not, a counter argument. If the terms are ambiguous, it isn’t clear what was agreed on (no idea what happens in that situation, likely you don’t get the millions).

When people make their arguments (philosophy of life/understanding of their situation/beliefs) around a long-standing Forever Alone situation, then there are often words used like ‘love’, ‘connection’ and ‘relationship’, and the first stage is absolutely to define these terms to be clear what you are even talking about.

Many Adult Virgins who need help getting rid of the V card (although there isn’t necessarily anything wrong with it) use a prostitute, and then post about the experience online. I’d say much of the time it seems to go well, especially with older people who’ve had a long-term problem (perhaps due to past bad experiences, childhood abuse or disability). Yet there is a proportion of people who are somewhat disappointed, and the most common complaint was, the sex worker was just “going through the motions”, and there was no ‘connection’.

Possibly, if they had have written down all their beliefs and expectations around this and defined terms, they could have known that what they were looking for was actually ‘connection’, and then defined what that is, as I hear it all the time and there is also the assumption that it is an objective thing and the same for everyone.
